Day of Dance 2018 was a great success!

The Brenau Dance Department’s seventh annual Day of Dance was another success, with almost 100 high schoolers participating in the Oct. 14 all-day event – the biggest turnout yet.

Day of Dance lets high-school dancers and their parents experience Brenau University and what it is like to be a college dance major, explore the campus and dance facilities, and meet the Brenau dance faculty, staff and current students. More than 25 senior high school students even auditioned for a highly coveted dance scholarship.

The day began at Brenau East with a welcome session for parents, studio and program directors, and visiting students, where they learned more about the admissions and financial aid process at Brenau, as well as hear from Student Services. Students then took morning classes in ballet and commercial jazz, instructed by Nadia Mara and Derrick Smith respectively, and faculty instructors John Streit and Peter Swan led a ballet partnering class. In the afternoon, award-winning Chicago choreographer Joshua Blake Carter instructed the contemporary class, while Broadway and Rockettes dancer Paige Chambers Rutsche taught tap and Grayson High School dance director Xavier Lewis taught hip-hop. The day concluded with a showcase collaboration between the Brenau Dance Department and the Gainesville Ballet Company, and an ice cream social and raffle giveaway.

Results of a parent and student survey indicate the event was a big hit: On a 10-point scale, the average Day of Dance attendee rating was a 9!
