Mary “Loretta” Yamilkoski, wife of Professor Emeritus Dr. Vince Yamilkoski, died Sunday morning at her home. She was 70.
Yamilkoski was born in Watkinsville, Georgia in 1947. She attended Truett-McConnell College and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1969 with teacher certification in elementary education.
In 1969, Yamilkoski began her teaching career in the post schools of Fort Benning, Georgia where she met her husband while he was attending the Infantry School at Fort Benning.
They married in 1971 at the Watkinsville United Methodist Church and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. She convinced her husband to return to Watkinsville and continue his education at the University of Georgia. In 1979, the couple moved to Gainesville, where she taught at Lakeview Academy. She was awarded Teacher of the Year for the 1989-90 school year.
Throughout her teaching career, Yamilkoski was known as a loving, caring teacher. She loved to travel and to teach her students about nature.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 14, from noon to 2 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. at Ward’s Funeral Home located at 758 Main Street S.W. Gainesville.
Please keep Dr. Vince in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Loretta, both Lakeview Academy Lower School and the Brenau Child Development Center were very close to her heart. You may make a donation in memory of Mary “Loretta” Yamilkoski to either school.
