New York-based photographer Nancy Hellebrand will be at the Gainesville campus on Thursday, March 9, from 5:30-7:00 p.m. to discuss her work in “Mom:Writing with Alzheimer’s.”The exhibition is on view in Leo Castelli Gallery until April 20. This selection of Hellebrand’s work features photographs of her mother’s journals as she battled Alzheimer’s. One can follow the drift of her mother’s attention, feel the pain of her isolation, and experience the beauty that leads to empathy for more than a single individual.
Hellebrand’s work has been shown in museums and galleries internationally. Museum exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art the International Center of Photography, the National Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Tate Britain, the Tate Liverpool, and the Barbican Centre in London. he National Portrait Gallery in London gave her a solo exhibition that was its first for a living, female, American artist. Solo exhibitions include Pace/MacGill and Heidi Cho Gallery, both in New York, the Morris Gallery of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Locks Gallery and the Paul Cava Gallery in Philadelphia.
Hellebrand’s photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of the City of London, the Princeton University Art Museum, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
