Successful White Water event for adult students and families

Brenau graduate student Randy Jones and his family at the White Water event.

Brenau Student Services recently hosted a day at the Six Flags White Water park for 33 adult students and their families.

Online students from as far south as Valdosta and Augusta made the drive north for a day of fun in the sun.

“It was great to meet some of our online students who have only connected with the university via the internet,” said Rosanne Short, director of military and veteran services. “We opened the event to all of our adult students, not only our veteran students. It was a great turn out and fun for all.”

Golf Team honors fallen veteran

Golf bearing a tag honoring deceased veteran Purple Heart recipient Ronald Graham.

Brenau’s golf team carries a tag on each bag that honors a deceased veteran. This year they are honoring a Purple Heart recipient Ronald Eskew Brown, the grandfather of Jeff Graham that often drives the athletic bus, and is the spouse of Angie Graham in Accounting. Jeff’s grandfather died four days before his mother was born in WWII. Jeff’s mother gave them his death certificate signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, his purple heart, a military hat and a book on the history of a combat regiment for the 104th infantry with his name in it , among those who were killed.

Between our five campuses and online, Brenau University has about 150 students who are veterans. This week, we’ll celebrate these students as well as our faculty and staff veterans in observance of Veterans Day. Honorific events include:

  • Brenau has placed 442 patriotic pinwheels on Owens Student Center lawn, each one signifying a Brenau University student that has a military affiliation. This figured represents approximately 9 % of Brenau students.
  • The College Republicans sponsored an event for students to sign holiday cards to be sent to service members who are outside the continental United States.
  • Veteran employees will be honored with a formal invitation-only luncheon on Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Yonah Board Room. This year’s Brenau Outstanding Veteran Award will be presented at the luncheon. If you are a veteran employee and did not get an invitation please contact ude.uanerb@trohsr as soon as possible.
  • The College Republicans are co-hosting a flag ceremony with in conjunction with Military and Veterans Services. The ceremony will demonstrate  the proper way to dispose of a flag. Everyone is invited to attend and participate. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8.
  • Friday, Nov. 10, on the federal Veteran’s Day federal holiday, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to join in a bipartisan show of respect and support for our veterans. Wear red white and blue, or any combination your wardrobe allows in order to help honor the veterans.  Please meet on the steps of Owens at 11 a.m. to take a group picture.
  • Our campuses will be honoring veterans in conjunction with their Adult Student Appreciation week festivities this week. Wendy’s donated 100 free Frosty coupons for our online veterans.
  • 90 veterans and their families will join the Alumni Association at a Hawks Game at Phillips Arena on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, to honor their service to our country. The $25 admission includes your ticket, tee shirt and $10 in concessions. There may be a few tickets available if any veteran students or faculty/staff would like to join us. Contact ude.uanerb@trohsr first come first served.

Remember, even if you hate the idea of war, as our 2016 recipient of the Brenau Outstanding Veteran award Brenau Post Master Vern Smedley,  said “Service members and vets also hate war, but we were sworn to serve. We do. Many still do.” Please help us thank them.

Send a Thank You to a Soldier for Thanksgiving

There was such an excellent turnout of letters submitted last year that Brenau’s Military and Veteran Services, a division of Student Services, is once again participating in The Bert Show’s Big Thank You.

We need handwritten letters of gratitude to military service members deployed outside of the U.S. that will be delivered for the Thanksgiving holiday. Write as many as you like and ask family and friends, kids’ classes and groups to join in!

Please write letters on one sheet of 8.5″ by 11″, letter size paper. There is no need to put them in envelopes, we will have them delivered in bulk to the Bert Show. Please only include positive messages. See more info at

Please have letter to Sue Johnston at the Student Services Switchboard before the end of business on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017.
