Condolences to friends and family of Louise Bauck

Louise Bauck

Brenau friend and former colleague Dr. Louise Astrid Brouwer Bauck passed away Monday, July 15, in Vancouver, British Columbia, following a terminal stomach cancer diagnosis.

Bauck was a faculty member in biology from 2005-2012 and served as chair of the Department of Math & Science from 2008-2010. After moving to Nebraska, she continued to support Brenau’s programs by teaching online and accompanying study abroad trips to the Yucatan from 2013-2018. She was the 2008 Tri-Delta Professor of the Year, 2009 Brenau Adviser of the Year and 2010 Outstanding Professor of the Year.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in marine biology at Simon Fraser University and a Master of Veterinary Science with a specialization in avian medicine — a field that would ultimately lead to her acknowledgement as a global leader in the practice of avian medicine — from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon.

Brenau will remember Bauck as a dynamic, optimistic person with a quick smile and an innate talent for teaching. Her passion for biology, conservation, research and travel was unparalleled and evident in her every action. Students as well as faculty describe her as a mentor, a role model and an enthusiastic scientist, and her family remembers her as “our rock, our inspiration, our guide to the enchantments of the natural world.” Over the years, she inspired a whole flock of Brenau Biology alumnae who will continue to spread her wisdom far and wide.

Bauck is survived by her husband, Stewart, her children, Christi and Anje, granddaughter, Everly, cat, Molikini, whippet, Rupert, and albino Nelson’s milksnake, Candy Corn. A small celebration of life event will be held in Vancouver in late August. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Louise’s name to the Nature Conservancy or World Wildlife Fund.
