Presidential Search Process

FROM: Mike Smith, Presidential Search Committee Chair

As chair of the Presidential Search Committee, I thank you for your interest and participation as the search for Brenau University’s next president begins. Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to participate in the open forums held in October.

While this will be the first of many communications during the search, I want to share with you the process that will be followed to select the next president of Brenau. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees has appointed the following committee members to conduct the search under the guidance of Cheryl Hyatt of Hyatt-Fennell Executive Search:

Trustees – Mike Smith (Chair), Carole Ann Daniel, Robin Dudley, Emmie Howard, Anna Jacobs, Pete Miller, Frank Norton, Jr., Amy Whitley, Philip Wilheit

Campus Community – Mike Lochstampfor, Athletic Director; Redenna Poole, Assistant VP, Enrollment Management & Director, Admissions Operations; Heather Ross, Associate Professor & Chair, Physical Therapy; James Sennett, Professor of Business Ethics & Coordinator of Business Programs Fairburn Campus; Jody Wall, Chief of Staff; Eugene Williams, Dean, College of Education

Student – Sommer Stockton, Student Government Association Executive President

Advisor – Dr. Ed Schrader, President

The Presidential Search Committee has been charged as follows:

“The Executive Committee, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, has appointed a Presidential Search Committee. This committee, working alongside of Hyatt-Fennell (our Search Firm), is charged with evaluating the pool of qualified candidates assembled; selecting a short-list of semifinalists for ‘airport interviews’ conducted by the Search Committee; and proposing approximately 3 candidates to the Executive Committee for the selection of a potential new president to be voted on by the Board of Trustees. While this will be a closed search, the process shall remain transparent to the Board while protecting the confidentiality of the candidates.”

Please pay special attention to the last sentence. This will be a closed search, and the candidates will remain confidential throughout the majority of the process. After the airport interviews, and subject to the confidentiality requirements of the individual candidates, campus interviews will be scheduled. I will, on behalf of the committee, continue to keep the rest of the process very transparent.

The search committee has met to review the position profile, which is posted on the Brenau website at, and the advertisement for the position. Advertising for the position has begun, and applicants have already reached out to Hyatt-Fennell. A PDF of the posting from the Chronicle of Higher Education is included below. Our expectations are to receive 60 or more applications by the Dec. 10 cutoff date. Hyatt-Fennell will vet the pool of applicants, as they are received, to verify that they meet our posted requirements.

As the committee moves through the process, I will keep you posted on developments. We do expect this to be a desirable position and should see a great pool of candidates! We are looking for the best person to fill some big shoes, regardless of gender, race or ethnicity.

Dr. Schrader has Brenau University on a great path for success. We want to continue that path and accomplish our mission to transform our students’ lives.

Cheryl Hyatt, Hyatt-Fennell, will be the point of contact for the campus community. Please use moc.llennef-ttayh@ttayhc to reach Cheryl Hyatt.

I look forward to bringing you continual positive news throughout this process.
