Staff Chat: Kristen Oliver, Writer & Editor in Communications & Publications

If you’ve ever wondered who wrote Who and edited a Brenau press release or Update item, chances are it was Kristen Oliver in the Office of Communications & Publications.

Oliver is also behind most of the Staff Chats posted here on Update, but this time around we’re putting her in the spotlight.

A native of Cumming, Georgia, Oliver began working at Brenau this time last year and was recruited to the position after working two years as a reporter at the Gainesville Times. Prior to that, she was a reporter with the Opelika-Auburn News in Auburn, Alabama, where she covered education and her alma mater, Auburn University.

Oliver said she was always attracted to working in higher education communications since interning for Auburn Magazine, the university’s alumni publication. It was this connection that first introduced her to David Morrison, who was once editor of that magazine prior to becoming vice president at Brenau.

Oliver is no stranger to single-gender education, something that drew her to Brenau. She graduated from Pinecrest Academy in Cumming, a Catholic school with single-gender classrooms in middle and high school.

Today, she lives in Dawsonville with her fiance, Gainesville Times reporter Nick Bowman, and their three dogs, Holly the mini-Aussie, Charlie the corgi, and Max the mutt and “perfect dog.” She and Nick are getting married in November.
