Dr. Schell and the other founding members of what is now the Brenau School of Occupational Therapy conceived the idea of funding an annual visitor to the university who is a leader in the profession and science of occupational therapy. They felt these leaders could “feed the souls” of faculty, local therapists, researchers, scientists and students by sharing their knowledge and expertise in discussions that would add to the depth of research and teaching activities at Brenau.

The first presenter in 2007 was Dr. Betty Yerxa, who was instrumental in promoting occupational therapy as a profession and as a science. As a leader in the profession herself, Schell recruited eight additional national and international scholars to present at Brenau, culminating in the most recent visit by Dr. Glen Gillen in February.

To ensure that these renowned scholars would continue to visit Brenau, Dr. Schell and her husband John established the Boyt Schell Visiting Scholar Fund upon her retirement in May 2016. We look forward to welcoming the 2018 Boyt Schell Occupational Science Scholar and continuing this valuable legacy for years to come.
