Georgia State Rep. Park Cannon, who came to national prominence last summer with her speech to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, spoke Tuesday at Brenau in a program hosted by the Black Student Association. A racially mixed group of students, faculty, staff and Gainesville-area residents gathered in Disque Lecture Hall in the Burd Center for the 90-minute discussion. The 25-year-old Cannon, the youngest member of the Georgia General Assembly, represents District 58, which covers East Atlanta, Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Edgewood, Gresham Park, Grant Park, Kirkwood, Ormewood Park and Boulevard Heights. She identified herself as queer. Junior Mass Communication major, Kenya Hunter interviewed Cannon in the town hall-format event. Topics included the 2016 election, Cannon’s decision to support Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, queer voting rights, gentrification of Cannon’s predominantly African-American district, how she got into politics and how she’s received in the legislature, particularly by older white male elected officials.
