The Northeast Georgia History Center at Brenau University celebrated the spring season with a Victory Garden kickoff event April 6.
The Hall County Master Gardeners recognized two Gainesville locals, 100-year-old Dee Ridley and World War II veteran Bill Vance, at the ceremony. The two planted the first seeds of the 2016 growing season.
The History Center’s Victory Garden replicates the home front gardens grown by many U.S. civilians to aid wartime efforts during WWII.
“The victory garden serves as an interpretive tool for the History Center and produce grown in the garden goes to different community organizations,” said Executive Director Glen Kyle. “It’s a great example of how all these different institutions in the community can work together for a multiplicity of causes.”
