Former Department of Dance Chair Vincas Greene, who left Brenau last summer and is now an adjunct professor at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, returned to Gainesville last week.
He taught several technique, composition and appreciation classes during his stay. He also met with students to choreograph Splintered Memories, a performance based on the oeuvre of John Heliker, the famous New York artist whose work is being featured at Brenau through Nov. 19.
The performance, which involves eight students and two understudies, will be held in the Sellars Gallery, site of the ongoing John Heliker: The Order of Things exhibit, on Nov. 18.
Greene said he enjoyed revisiting his old stomping grounds, especially meeting up with one of his former students, Madia Cooper-Ashirifi, who is now a Brenau dance instructor herself.
No matter where his career takes him, he said he will forever cherish the opportunities Brenau has given both him and its graduates.
“The dancing program exposes people to high-quality dance and nurtures their artistic and physical selves,” he said. “As performers, attendees or instructors, they’ll always feel like Brenau gave them a place to grow and start their journey as an artist.”
