A memorial service is planned Tuesday, Sept. 29, for Anne Harwell North, the mother of Kings Bay Campus Director Robert North.
The service will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1400 Norwich St., in Brunswick, Georgia at 4 p.m.
Anne, a lifelong Brunswick resident, passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 90. She is survived by four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
During World War II, she worked as a secretary for the J.A. Jones Co., which built 99 ships for the war effort from 1943-1945. The local “jitterbug queen” would later meet her husband, Louis O. North, at a USO dance in Hinesville, Georgia.
From the age of 18 to 85, she worked for 22 businesses in the coastal south Georgia area. Her son recalled her as a woman deeply involved with her community, with a dual passion for bridge and sailing. “My brother, sister and I were blessed to have a mother who was nurturing and made life fun,” Dr. Robert North said. “Our childhoods involved many community and school activities, as she always encouraged us to pursue our goals.”
Contributions can be made in her name to both the First United Methodist Church, as well as Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway in Brunswick.
