The Brenau Department of Music will present the PBS documentary Healing Words: Poetry and Medicine at the Thurmond McRae Lecture Hall, 625 Academy St., on the Gainesville historic campus at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Faculty, staff and students are all invited to the screening. The 2008 documentary focuses on physicians at the University of Florida’s teaching hospital who incorporate artistic therapies alongside traditional medical care.
“This video is very touching,” said Dr. Barbara Steinhaus, chair of Brenau’s Department of Music. “They were able to capture some really deep feelings that people had and some of the patients were willing to disclose bridges they had to cross.”
Steinhaus includes Healing Words in her new Introduction to Arts in Health Care course. She said the curriculum is designed to help fine arts and health sciences students develop their sense of imagination and creativity, along with empathy and self-care techniques.
“A lot of people are not aware that health care settings use the arts as an assisting intervention,” she said, “and how effective it can be.”
A Q&A session will follow the screening. For more information on the presentation and upcoming course, Steinhaus may be contacted at email@example.com or (770) 534-6235.
