Senior Thesis Project Directed by Ann Demling, featuring Gay Hammond April 17-19

A Lie of the Mind Sally and Lorraine contemplate bonfireSam Shepard’s “A Lie of the Mind” and Gainesville Theatre Alliance’s final Discovery Series production runs April 17-19 at the Brenau Downtown Center Theatre on the Square with free admission at the door and all shows beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Directed by Brenau Professor of Theatre Ann Demling, the play is a senior thesis project featuring performances by Brenau seniors Skyler Passmore , Rebecca DelPlato, Jackie Mileson, Stacia Sexton and Bryan Montemayor as well as professor Gay Hammond

The play centers around the effects of domestic violence on two families. Jake is convinced he has killed his wife Beth in a furious attack of jealousy. We find that although she has survived, she is left with severe brain injuries that leave her unable to speak or talk well.

Commenting on Shepard’s main ideas, Ben Brantley of the New York Times states, “Believing you’re the person you pretend to be is the leap of faith that lets you get on with your life.” Shepard’s darkly comic edge of the surreal helps to underline the essence of human frailty and love in this haunting drama.
