After day one of the 2015 NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships, March 5, 2015, in Oklahoma City, the Brenau University Golden Tigers swim team sits in third place with 124 points, trailing only reigning national champions Oklahoma Baptist University (195) and SCAD-Savannah (137).
The Golden Tigers went into the national championship contest ranked No. 3 in the nation after winning the Appalachian Swim Conference title.
In the opening event of the finals, the Golden Tigers set a new school record and placed second in the 200 Medley Relay in a blistering 1:44.72.
Courtney Hayward claimed her first national title of the meet in the 500 freestyle, smashing her previous school record and touching the wall at 4:56.87. Ella Kleinschmidt finished sixth in the same event with a time of 5:09.57.
Junior Mary Katherine Jabbia set a personal best time and placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:08.27), while Talia Sola followed with a 16th place finish in 2:14.00.
In the 50 freestyle, senior Michelle Billeaud shined with an eighth place time of 23.99.
The final event of the night, Brenau raced to a touch out for third place in the 800 Free Relay in 7:40.19.
“Today was excellent and watching our women go toe to toe with the fastest in the NAIA is exhilarating,” said Head Coach Blaire Bachman. “We had several individuals find the spotlight and our relays really brought us some big points. Tomorrow is an even stronger day for us and we look to keep the momentum and excitement rolling along.”
Events continue on day two of the championships with preliminary rounds starting at 9 am central.
