Brenau’s Macy Dwyer, a senior majoring in interior design, was selected for the 24-member U.S. dragon boat team that traveled to Poznan, Poland, for the 2014 International Canoe Federation World Championships this past Aug. 28-30. Her team finished in fourth place in the 2000 meter junior division race, and won the overall women’s division trophy and the overall ranking nations trophy, making them the U.S. World Champions.

“Poland was a beautiful place to race. It had incredible historical architecture, delicious food and the people there were very hospitable,” she said. “Although it was tough and focused racing, each country would make an effort to be friendly with each other. My teammates and I made many friends from Germany, Romania, Canada, Italy and more.”

Macy is a full-time sprint kayaker and she trains at the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club, which is at the 1996 Olympic Site for rowing and flatwater kayaking in Gainesville. They have several dragon boats at the club and hold a large festival race with them every year. While preparing for the championship, she had kayak training practice twice a day, along with her dragon boat training twice a week.

Macy also just participated in a race this past Saturday, Sept. 27 in Peachtree City.
