As an educational affiliate with the High Museum of Atlanta, Brenau faculty, staff and students may experience cultural opportunities for free, including the upcoming Conversations with Contemporary Artists featuring Abelardo Morell on Thursday, March 6 and Julie Mehretu on Monday, April 21. Abelardo Morell, a Cuban born photographer, gives a lecture in the High’s Rich Theatre on Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. Morell’s exhibition, The Universe Next Door, opens at the High Museum this week. He will discuss the trajectory of his career, beginning with early photographs of his children to innovative explorations with the mesmerizing principles of optics.
Julie Mehretu, who is best known for her abstract paintings and prints, lectures on Monday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in the Alliance Theatre. The High recently acquired a monumental painting by Mehretu titled Mogamma (A Painting in Four Parts) Part 2. In this painting, Mehretu explores the public square as a hub where social and political change happens. She uses layers of gestural marks to suggest the movement of people as well as abstracted lines of vibrant color to introduce a sense of urgency.
