Single-Car Wreck Closes Street Through Gainesville Campus

Car crash into telephone pole
Utility workers assess damage near Brenau University’s Gainesville campus.

Gainesville police closed Boulevard in front of Brenau’s main campus Monday after a single car slammed into a utility pole and created a potential hazard for motorists and pedestrians. No one was seriously injured in the crash, but the female driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital for observation.

It is unclear what caused the accident, in which the auto jumped the curb at a near 90-degree angle to the traffic lane and slammed into the pole, which carried both power lines and transformer. The impact was severe enough to require replacement of the pole. Police on the scene stated that the driver of the car “had some health issue” that caused her to accelerate rapidly and lose control of the vehicle.
