Brenau Alum Appears in ‘Lombardi’ Play

Actor Derrick Ledbetter, a 2007 Brenau graduate, plays reporter Michael McCormick in the play, Lombardi, which runs Thursdays through Sundays, Aug. 16-25, in the Buford Community Center’s Sylvia Beard Theatre, 2200 Buford Highway, Buford, Ga. Most performances will begin at 7:30pm and Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m. The play is based on the life and times of legendary Green bay Packers football coach Vince Lombardi, who is sent to get the story of what makes Lombardi “tick” for Look magazine.

The play features as Lombardi the actor John Woodsan, who has performed in film, television and theaters around the country, including appearances on Broadway with Dame Diana Rigg and at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York with Al Pacino.

Ledbetter, who graduated from Duluth High School and came to Brenau through Gainesville State College and the Gainesville Theatre Alliance, earned an M.F.A. in theater from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Working out of the New York area, Ledbetter has recently performed in the off- Broadway production Austerity of Hope and regionally in with PlayMakers Repertory Company in Chapel Hill, N.C., Georgia Shakespeare, and Cincinnati Shakespeare. He is most remembered from his student days for his roles in Equus and Metamorphoses.

Ledbetter says the Lombardi play “has a lot to do with the way we communicate with each other. Every relationship we have has a different way of communicating, and this play captures the essence of these differences between fathers and sons, mothers and sons, and husbands and wives.”
