The 22nd anniversary of the Gainesville/Hall County Alliance for Literacy’s “brain-teasing, crowd-pleasing, good-time romp of a spelling bee” is Tuesday, April 23, 7 p.m. at Brenau’s Pearce Auditorium.
Hosted once again by Assistant Professor of Theatre Gay Hammond, she has also been the wordsmith for almost 20 years. “As a dedicated philologist,” says Hammond, “this event perfectly combines my wild addiction to the glory and vagaries of the English language and my surreptitious compulsion to poke fun at our competitive foibles!”
Hammond says its getting harder and harder to surprise the teams with new words and laughs but the challenge is definitely worth it for the Alliance for Literacy.
Does Brenau have a team? Yes! Pre-nursing major Meg Bronaugh, psychology major Macayla Coleman and English majors Morgan Davis and Amy Wilson are the Brenau Bellas, Brenau University’s bee team. For more info call 770-531-4337 or visit http://www.allianceforliteracy.org. The spelling bee is to the public. Tickets available at the door; Adults $5, Children $2.
