The 2012-2013 season begins with optimism for the Brenau University Golden Tiger basketball. The team returns five seniors and six juniors, with three new talented freshmen. Returning players include all SSAC East team selections Gabby Harvey, Nikki Reed and Brittney Wiley.
Coach Kris Stewart states, “We were very close to having an outstanding season last year, losing several close games in the last minute. I think our players learned from that experience. We now have year in our system, so I think that there will be more reacting because they are more comfortable.”
Brenau returns all five starters from last year’s 13-17 squad. Key contributors include Gabby Harvey (9.1 ppg, 10.8 ppg), Nikki Reed (12.7 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Brittney Wiley (13.7 ppg). Tala Black (9.0 ppg), Sarah Ward (36% 3 point shooting), Raven Crawford (5.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Olivia Williams (2.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg) are expected to fill in with their experience. Other returners include Anela Durmic, Kaitlyn Fleming, Anastasia Minaeva and Jasmyn Farmer.
About the returning players, Stewart says, “Our returning players will all contribute to our success. They all have unique skill sets and will be expected to be ready to compete. I feel good about our growth as a team.”
Freshman include Anikee Combee, Myka Lightfoot and Claire Zimmerman. Coach Stewart notes that each of the three newcomers bring something different to the team. “Anikee is very versatile and an excellent passer. Myka brings solid 3 point shooting and Claire is an very tough, physical guard that is a very fundamentally sound player. I think once all three players adjust to the college game they can all be contributors,” says Stewart.
Opening day is Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Brenau University Gymnasium. If you’re in town, go out and support our Golden Tigers!
