Hugh Christian, Local Radio Leader, Women’s College Parent, dies

The Office of Alumni & Events extends our condolences to Christelle Christian (WC ’92) upon the sudden death of her father, Hugh Christian, on October 19. Hugh Christian was one of the first north Georgia radio owners to cover local Gainesville and Athens hourly news and sports simultaneously. His company Radio Athens, Inc. owned WRFC Athens, GA and WFOX-FM Gainesville, GA.

“Under Hugh’s leadership at WFOX the station garnered nearly half of the market, and the University of Georgia football’s G Day game became an enormous success thanks in large part to Hugh’s tireless work,” explains Jay Andrews, Director of Broadcasting at Brenau University. “Hugh Christian made great radio things happen, and he will be missed.”
Christelle Christian is the current President of Brenau’s Alumni Nest in Athens, Ga. Her father hosted the Athens alumni group at Square One Fish Company, where he served as Marketing Director, on the eve of his death last week. Hugh’s niece, Jenni Christian Panone (WC ’97), also attended Brenau. Sympathies from the Brenau family are appreciated, and condolences may be sent to Christelle Christian at 115 Gatewood Circle, Athens, GA 30607 and Jenni Panone at 391 Ridgewater Dr., Marietta, GA 30068.
