Ally Condie, the author of one of the hottest teen book series since the Twilight and The Hunger Games sagas, will appear at a special presentation at Brenau´s Pearce Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Brenau University´s historic Pearce Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Condie, whose dystopian saga Matched became an international best-seller when it was published in 2010, has been characterized in publicity as a cross between Brave New World and The Handmaid´s Tale. In the series all aspects of life are controlled by “The Society,” a system in which everything from the food people eat to the music they hear has been pre-selected. It is the story of Cassia, a 17-year-old girl who´s spent her life waiting to learn who “The Society” will select as her ideal mate, only to find herself falling in love with someone else.
The second book in the series, Crossed, also reached best-seller lists after its Nov. 1, 2011, publication. The trilogy concludes with Reached, scheduled to hit bookstores in November 2012.
Dr. Ken Frank, chair of the humanities department at Brenau, says that Condie´s first novel was selected as the “common reader” as part of the first-year seminar required read for all freshmen at the Brenau Women´s College. “In addition to her meeting with Brenau students, it is our good fortune that Ms. Condie has also agreed to appear at the public presentation for entire community.”
Condie is part of a string of best-selling authors, including Kathryn Stockett (The Help) and Khaled Hosseini (The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns) who have appeared on campus through their involvement in the first-year seminar series.
In addition to her auditorium talk, Condie will also sign books, which will be available for purchase, at the public event. Frank said that anyone can attend the event, including school groups and classes, but that non-reserved seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
Condie, a favored speaker on college campuses and libraries around the country, received a degree in English teaching from Brigham Young University and spent a number of years teaching high school English in Utah and upstate New York. She lives with her husband and three sons outside of Salt Lake City.
Disney optioned motion picture rights for Matched and signed David Slade (30 Days of Night and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) to direct. Kieran and Michelle Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes 2) wrote the script. The company has not announced any casting or release date for the movie.
