The event is free and open to the public. Condie, whose dystopian saga Matched became an international best-seller when it was published in 2010, has been characterized in publicity as a cross between Brave New World and The Handmaid´s Tale. In the series all aspects of life are controlled by "The Society," a system in which everything from the food people eat to the music they hear has been pre-selected. It is the story of Cassia, a 17-year-old girl who´s spent her life waiting to learn who "The Society" will select as her ideal mate, only to find herself falling in love with someone else. The second book in the series, Crossed, also reached best-seller lists after its Nov. 1, 2011, publication. The trilogy concludes with Reached, scheduled to hit bookstores in November 2012. Dr. Ken Frank, chair of the humanities department at Brenau, says that Condie´s first novel was selected as the "common reader" as part of the first-year seminar required read for all freshmen at the Brenau Women´s College. "In addition to her meeting with Brenau students, it is our good fortune that Ms. Condie has also agreed to appear at the public presentation for entire community." Condie is part of a string of best-selling authors, including Kathryn Stockett (The Help) and Khaled Hosseini (The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns) who have appeared on campus through their involvement in the first-year seminar series. In addition to her auditorium talk, Condie will also sign books, which will be available for purchase, at the public event. Frank said that anyone can attend the event, including school groups and classes, but that non-reserved seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Condie, a favored speaker on college campuses and libraries around the country, received a degree in English teaching from Brigham Young University and spent a number of years teaching high school English in Utah and upstate New York. She lives with her husband and three sons outside of Salt Lake City. Disney optioned motion picture rights for Matched and signed David Slade (30 Days of Night and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) to direct. Kieran and Michelle Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes 2) wrote the script. The company has not announced any casting or release date for the movie. Luckily, Flu Shots are available. Flu season is fast approaching, and given the summer bugs that brought a lot of folk down, Human resources Director Kelley Maddox suggests all faculty, staff and students explore their options for flu shots as soon as possible. For those who have Brenau health insurance, shots are covered, if you get them through your physician´s office or at CVS Minute Clinics (the drug store chain´s Web site has a locater service at www.cvs.com/flu to help you find a store near you where you can get the shots). For those who do not have Brenau health insurance or who like prefer the convenience, Brenau´s Health Services on the Gainesville campus, in partnership with the Hall County Health Department, has a limited quantity of flu vaccine available by appointment for students, faculty and staff (18 and older) for $25 per injection. Call Health Services at 770-534-6135 for your appointment; no appointments will be made by e-mail. After you have your appointment, you can pay at the accounting office, located at 316 Boulevard, by cash, check of credit card, then take the receipt to Health Services at your appointed time. Flu shots are available through other drug stores, clinics and public health services. But neither these nor the Brenau Health Services shots are covered by Brenau group insurance. Monday, September 24, 2012 • No.13399 • Click for pdf file A Letter from Trustees Campaign Chair Lorry Schrage Dear Brenau Faculty and Staff, There are many reasons for Brenau´s forward momentum. Two of the most important are your good work, along with philanthropic support for the Campus Campaign. Whether you have been part of the Brenau community for many years or are new members this year, it is important for you to understand the importance of giving by our faculty and staff. Scholarships are absolutely essential to our students in today´s economy. Gifts from faculty and staff directly support scholarships at Brenau. Brenau seeks funding from foundations and other donors each year. These funders are impressed with your participation because it demonstrates that our faculty and staff support the university and take pride in being a part of its history. Giving by faculty and staff encourages others to give also. We have the ability to influence students, alumni, parents and friends of Brenau to support our university, its programs and our students. Last year 57% of Brenau faculty and staff participated in the Campus Campaign. This year we want to reach the goal of 100% participation campus-wide, and we cannot do this without your help. The size of the gift is not important - the fact that you give is important because you are saying that you believe in our university, believe in our students, and believe in our mission. Thank you for your loyal support of Brenau. Sincerely, Lawrence (Lorry) B.
