The Highlands Playhouse production of Dames At Sea opens this Thursday night starring Carly Berg, a BFA Musical Theatre major. Costumes were designed by Fred Lloyd, Associate Professor of Theatre.
Dames At Sea is a musical comedy, written by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, with music composed by Jim Wise. It tells the story of a young woman who arrives in the big town, alone and starving. Through lucky coincidence she joins a theatre company, only to find out that they are broke and their building is being demolished. More coincidence and a navy acquaintance lead to the show being produced aboard a navy vessel.
Carly Berg will be a junior this year. “The rehearsal process was an experience in itself,” she remembers, “because we basically put the show together in only 2 weeks! It was wonderful to see everything come together so quickly. I am playing the part of Ruby, and it`s such an incredible experience. Bill Patti, the director, and the other people on the artistic staff – like Karyn Tomzcak, the choreographer, DaMon Goff, the music director, and of course Professor Lloyd – are fantastic to work with. They make it such a friendly environment here in the Highlands Playhouse.”
The musical opens Thursday, July 26 and runs until August 18 every day except Mondays. Highlands Playhouse is a community-funded theatre located on 362 Oak Street in Highlands, North Carolina. Highlands is a resort town in the scenic North Carolina mountains, located less than 80 miles north of Gainesville.
