The Brenau Golden Tigers tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship tournament with a 5-0 win over No. 10-ranked Southern Nazarene. The team faces its perennial nemesis, No. 2 Fresno Pacific when play continues at 9 a.m. Thursday at the tournament in Mobile, Ala.
“We came out strong in doubles today, and I was very happy with the way we performed,” said Coach Andre Ferreira. “Southern Nazarene has had a very good season this year and we expected a tough match. It is great to move forward in the tournament and, once again, be amongst the top 8 teams at nationals. We look forward to facing Fresno Pacific tomorrow morning. It is always exciting to play one of the best teams in the country, so we are prepared to give our best.”
In the nine-game match, the Tigers won all three doubles competitions and only had to get singles wins from Eline Nagels and Tiffany de Almeida to advance. However, when play was called because it was no longer mathematically possible to beat Brenau three of the four other Tigers singles players had won their first sets and Maria Perdomo-Medina had narrowly lost her first 5-7. Perdomo-Medina and partner Nagels, the #2 Brenau pair, easily disposed of their opponents 8-3 in an earlier matchup.
Brenau´s No. 1 singles player Lyn See Choo was ahead in her match 6-2, 2-1 when play ended. Earlier she and doubles partner Hannah Thompson won 8-3.
Fresno Pacific, Thursday´s opponent, knocked off Indiana Wesleyan University 5-0 in Wednesday play.
