Where´s an avian veterinarian when you need one? The Brenau spelling bee team Tuesday acquitted itself quite well at the annual Alliance for literacy fundraiser, only to be undone by the word psittacine.
For those of us who are not Dr. Louise Bauck, the word, pronounced as if it were “sit -a-sign,” is an adjective defined as 1., relating to, resembling, or characteristic of parrots, or 2., of or belonging to the family Psittacidae, which includes the parrots, macaws, and parakeets.
The team, which called itself “The Brenau Belles,” comprised sophomore English major Ashley Lee, freshman English major Morgan Davis and senior English major Kacey Janes.
