Although it´s DR. Deedy now, since university presented her with the honorary degree, it will be just plain Miss Carmen when the internationally acclaimed author and storyteller sits down for lunch with Brenau students, faculty, staff and others who care to join on Thursday, April 12, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., in the Upper Dining Room of Hopkins Dining Hall on the Gainesville campus. In the morning Deedy will visit McEver Arts Academy, the charter school in the community where Brenau faculty and students, thanks to a grant from Target Stores foundation, have been working with the middle schoolers on publishing their own first book. Deedy, who has just published her first “chapter” book: The Cheshire Cheese Cat: A Dickens of a Tale. Then she will come back to campus for the informal gathering.
Here´s the drill; starting at about 12:30 grab some lunch, if you want to, and find a seat close by. We know some of you will be making your ways from Thursday classes, so don´t worry about coming in late or leaving early. We´re not kidding about the “informal” part. At about 1:30, we will hand Deedy a microphone, then sit back in pure delight as she spins her yarns about courting cockroaches, mice-averse cats who help Charles Dickens with writer´s block, naked geese and whatever else might pop from the fertile imagination of this animated, creative talent. She´ll also answer any of your questions about how she works – every step of the process from concept to taking a story idea to the published work.
Copies of The Cheshire Cheese Cat and other Deedy books, already in stock in the campus bookstore, will be also be available for purchase and signing.
