Mu Phi Epsilon celebrates 100-year anniversary with student recitals

Mu Phi Epsilon celebrates 100-year anniversary with student recitalsConsider it a musical buffet: There`s a little something for everyone, and you`ll go home satisfied. That`s the idea behind an upcoming concert hosted by Brenau University`s Department of Music. “Il Portale Musicale,” a celebration of a variety of classical music styles, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 26, at Brenau`s Pearce Auditorium and is free and open to the public. The concert, held once a semester, is a chance for music majors to showcase their talents.

This semester`s concert will be an even bigger celebration, marking the 100th anniversary of the national music honor fraternity, Mu Phi Epsilon, at Brenau University. Established at Brenau in 1911, the “Mu” chapter was recently re-established after a period of inactivity, and past members will be in attendance to mark the honor.

“Though it is an honor society, it also is a service organization,” said Dr. Barbara Steinhaus, chair of the Department of Music. “The organization has served the department internally this year by acting as ushers for all concerts and serving at receptions for faculty concerts.”

“Il Portale Musicale” — “The Musical Portal” in Italian — represents another “portal” of education, Steinhaus said. Students must pass a qualifying hearing in order to be included in the performance, and each performer plays or sings a piece prepared as part of their studies. Students also create their own program notes as part of the event.

“Generally we have a small group of pianists play, and then a group of vocalists,” Steinhaus said. “We try to keep it moving and interesting.”
