The Golden Tigers tennis team ranked sixth in the nation today with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics released its preseason coaches´ poll – the second Tigers´ squad along with the fifth-ranked softball team to be regarded as championship contenders. The tennis team finished 8th in the nation at the end of the 2011 season with an 11-8 record.
The bad news is that the top-ranked team in the nation is Auburn University at Montgomery, the defending national champ and one of six Brenau rivals in the Southern States Athletic Conference to crack the Top 25 poll.
The No. 1 spot is not out of the question for the Tigers. Although AUM has been the No. 1 team in the periodic polls 58 times since the NAIA initiated the coaches´ poll, the Tigers are in second place in the number of appearances with 10 No. 1 rankings.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings. The next poll will be released on Feb. 21.
